SAN ANTONIO – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Incarnate Word Cardinals 7-5 on Tuesday at Sullivan Field.
How it Happened
The Vaqueros (6-5) had the lead in the top of the third inning, going up 2-1 on a wild pitch by
Dalton Beck (2-0) that scored senior
Adrian Torres, and an RBI-double by junior Vela alum
Isaac Lopez.
In the bottom of the inning though,
Ryan Scott hit a 2-run double to give the Cardinals (9-4) the lead for good.
The Cardinals initially led 1-0 on a
JD Gregson double against junior
Randy Garza (0-1) in the second.
The Cardinals pushed their lead to 4-2 on a
Cameron Caley home run in the fourth.
The Vaqueros got one back in the fifth on a Lopez sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the inning, though, Gregson hit an RBI-triple and
Tyler Cowan followed with an RBI-single to make the score 6-3.
In the seventh,
Grant Randall was plunked with the bases loaded to force-in a run and put the Cardinals up 7-3.
Junior
Hank Warren belted his first home run in the ninth, a 2-run shot, to bring the Vaqueros within 7-5. Two outs later, Torres singled to bring the tying run to the plate before
Westin Walls got a groundout for his first save.

Sophomore
Wyatt Wiatrek pitched a perfect inning of relief, recording his first Division I strikeout.

UTRGV opens a 3-game series against Oakland on Friday at 6:30 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
