RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team closed out the 2023-24 season by falling to the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 68-59 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
Junior
Elijah Elliott led the Vaqueros (6-25, 2-18 WAC) with 24 points, four rebounds and four assists. Senior
Daylen Williams posted his fifth double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Junior
Sherman Brashear scored 11 points. Sophomore
Saliou Seye scored six points with five rebounds. Junior
Roy Jones III dished out four assists with a career-high tying three steals and two rebounds.
Jamari Sibley led the Thunderbirds (10-21, 5-15 WAC) with 15 points, six rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Dominique Ford scored 15 points with six assists.
Braden Housley scored 12 points with five rebounds, eight assists and two steals.
Prophet Johnson scored 10 points with five rebounds and two assists.
Zion Young scored 10 points.
The Vaqueros jumped out to a 6-3 lead on baskets by Williams, sophomore
Alex Horiuk, and Elliott.
The Thunderbirds took a 10-8 lead before Brashear and Williams hit driving layups on consecutive possessions and Elliott made a jumper to make the score 14-10.
The Thunderbirds scored 13 of the next 20 points to go up 23-21 before a Brashear jumper and a pair of Williams free throws gave the Vaqueros the lead.
Seye made a layup to put the Vaqueros up 27-26 before the Thunderbirds scored four of the final five points of the half to go up 30-28.
The Vaqueros and Thunderbirds traded baskets for the first eight minutes of the second half. The Vaqueros trailed 45-42 when Elliott scored seven-straight points on a jumper and five free throws to make the score 49-45 with 10 minutes remaining.
The Thunderbirds, however answered with a 23-8 run to go up 68-57 in the final minute.
