STEPHENVILLE – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball fell 11-1 in 8 innings in the first game of the doubleheader with the Tarleton State Texans on Friday at Tarleton Baseball Complex.
The Vaqueros (18-16, 7-9 WAC) were held to just three hits. Senior
Kade York, junior and Edinburg Vela alum
Isaac Lopez, and junior
Hank Warren accounted for UTRGV's hits.
The Texans (21-17, 11-8 WAC) got the scoring started in the bottom of the first when Cole Miears hit a two-run home run giving Tarleton State the 2-0 lead.
UTRGV answered back in the top of the second as they got a couple of runners on after a walk to graduate studetn
CJ Valdez and Lopez was hit by a pitch. That allowed Warren to deliver an RBI double scoring Valdez to make it 2-1.
That would be it for UTRGV as Tarleton State's pitching held the Vaqueros off the board the rest of the way. Grant Garza (8-0) pitched five shutout innings while allowing just one hit.
Tarleton State extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth as they loaded the bases against UTRGV starter
Isiah Campa. Tyson Drake delivered a two-run double knocking Campa out of the game and then the Texans scored a run on a wild pitch making it 5-1.
The Texans added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run single by Austin Russell, a sacrifice fly by Kooper Shook, and an RBI single by Mason Crews pushing their lead to 9-1 and then added two more in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch.
The Vaqueros and Texans will play game two of the doubleheader starting at approximately 6:30 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
