RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team is hosting the Seattle U Redhawks Sunday at 11 a.m. in a Western Athletic Conference (WAC) match at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The match is also Senior Day. The Vaqueros will recognize senior captain
Emilien Burnel before the match for his contributions to and impact on the team during his career. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
UTRGV (8-13, 0-1 WAC) is 9-3 all-time against the Redhawks (2-12, 0-1 WAC). These teams faced off twice in 2023, with Seattle U winning the regular season match, 5-2, in Seattle before the Vaqueros got their revenge in the first round of the WAC Tournament with a 4-2 victory. UTRGV took the win despite dropping the doubles point on a clinch by Burnel at No. 1 following wins on Courts Three through Five, including victories by sophomore McAllen Memorial alum
Agustin Salazar and junior
Sam Whitehead.
The Vaqueros are 5-2 at the Orville Cox Tennis Center in 2024 and are aiming to wrap up the home schedule with another win. They've been strong in doubles on home courts and have seen different parts of the lineup come through with big moments.
Burnel leads the Vaqueros with a 10-9 singles mark and 9-9 doubles mark this spring, all in the No. 1 flights. Freshman
Will Roberts picked up a win in his first WAC match last week at home, and freshman
Santiago Serrano boasts a strong 9-10 singles mark. Burnel and freshman
Ivo Isqueiro are 7-3 in the No. 1 doubles flight this season.
