RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the California Baptist Lancers 11-4 on Saturday at James W. Totman Stadium.
Junior
Francisco Hernandez (4-5) struck out six while walking two and allowing three runs on seven hits in 5.0 innings. All the runs came on solo home runs, as
Nicholas Dumesnil homered in the first and third innings and
Julian Alvarezhomered in the fourth to give the Lancers (32-19, 16-10 WAC) a 3-0 lead.
The Lancers finished with five home runs, as
Connor McGuire and
Cole Howarth added solo shots in the sixth to make the score 5-0.
Junior
Steven Lancia got the Vaqueros (23-22, 12-14 WAC) on the board against
Brandon Downer (6-4) in the seventh with a leadoff solo home run. Then, after a walk and an error put runners at second and third, graduate student
Adrian Torres hit an RBI-single, junior Vela alum
Isaac Lopez placed a perfect bunt between first and the mound to bring home another run, and senior
Kade York lifted a sacrifice fly to make the score 5-4.
Lopez finished 2-for-4 with a double.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Lancers put runners at second and third with nobody out, setting up an RBI-single by
Josh Paino. Two batters later, with the bases loaded, McGuire lifted a sacrifice fly and then
Garret Ostrander hit a 2-run single to make the score 9-4.
The Lancers added two runs in the eighth on an RBI-double by
Mitchel Simon and a sacrifice fly by
Michael Carpentier.
UTRGV and California Baptist close out this 3-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Fans can watch domestically on
