RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced on Monday that senior Nico Rodriguez, of the baseball team, is the Killers Golf UTRGV Student-Athlete of the Week.
 
Rodriguez made three appearances for the Vaqueros last week and was key to UTRGV picking up two wins over Abilene Christian over the weekend. 
 
Rodriguez came in against Texas Tech on Tuesday in the bottom of the eighth and got the Vaqueros out of the bases loaded jam. 
 
On Friday at Abilene Christian, Rodriguez entered the game in the bottom of the eighth and earned his third save of the season. Rodriguez faced used a pair of double plays to face the minimum as the Vaqueros picked up the 7-4 win in the series opener. 
 
On Sunday, Rodriguez pitched a career-high 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to help the Vaqueros to the 9-6 victory to clinch the series over Abilene Christian. Rodriguez came in once again to a bases loaded jam as he helped retain UTRGV's lead. Rodriguez kept the Wildcats off the board the rest of the way for his fourth win of the season.
 
Rodriguez is 4-0 on the season with a 2.40 ERA while pitching in 30.0 innings over 19 appearances. Rodriguez has allowed just six walks with 36 strikeouts and opponents are batting just .190 against him. Rodriguez ranks second in the WAC in ERA, third in opposing batting average against, ninth in appearances, first in runs allowed (9), second in hits allowed (19), tied for first in walks allowed, and fifth in games finished (10). 
 
UTRGV will be back in action on Friday at 8 p.m. when they kick off a three-game series at California Baptist.
