CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team battled during the first day of the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open on Friday at the Thomas J. Henry Tennis Courts in Corpus Christi.
 
A pair of freshmen picked up their first collegiate tennis wins as the Vaqueros kicked off the fall season. The day started with doubles action. Sophomore Santiago Serrano and freshman Eduardo Menezes earned a 6-3 win over Nicolas Chateau/Matthieu Coignet from Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to advance to the semifinals of the Green Draw. Serrano/Menezes will face Rice's duo of Petro Kuzmenok/Gabriel Porras at 9:30 a.m. for a chance at the draw title. 
 
In singles, freshman Isaac Smyth captured his first dub with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Luke Cantu from UTSA in the Yellow Draw. He'll play in the semifinals Saturday at 12 p.m. against Gabriel Porras from Rice. 
 
Sophomore Ivo Isqueiro and redshirt junior Sam Whitehead pushed their matches in the Red Draw to 10-point tiebreakers in the third set. Other Vaqueros showed good fight on their courts but came up just short. 
 
Action continues at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open on Saturday starting with doubles at 9 am.
