RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team dominated the Arkansas-Pine Bluff (UAPB) Golden Lions and earned its third consecutive shutout victory, 3-0, Sunday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
UTRGV (3-2-1) redshirt junior
Savannah Frisby scored twice in the first half, finding the goal in the 17' off an assist from freshman forward
Lisa Elowsson and again in the 21' on a feed from sophomore defender
Rosie Train. The Vaqueros offense was extremely active from the jump, taking 11 shots and putting four on goal in the first 45 minutes.
The offensive pressure was a direct result of UTRGV's stifling defense. The Vaqueros didn't allow the Golden Lions to take a single shot in the first half and hardly allowed any kind of offensive pressure. UTRGV was physical and fast and looked in complete control, passing well and maintaining possession throughout the half.
UTRGV camped on its offensive half of the pitch in the second half. The Vaqueros took seven shots in the first 15 minutes of the period with sophomore midfielder
Linnea Eld and freshman midfielder
Rubi Ortiz leading the way. They earned corners and throw-ins a plenty as they overpowered UAPB.
As the Vaqueros continued to dominate the match, the contest increased in physicality as the Golden Lions attempted to force UTRGV out of the offensive third. Senior defender
Abbie Bailey was awarded a penalty kick in the 79
th minute and a yellow card was administered to a UAPB player shortly after.
The Golden Lions didn't establish possession across midfield until there were just 10 minutes remaining in the match. They got a free kick but nothing developed from it before the Vaqueros went right back to their offensive side of the pitch. UTRGV's dominant performance prevented UAPB from taking a single shot or earning any corners in the match.
The Vaqueros continued to attack to the final minute, and in the 85' Elowsson scored on Train's second assist of the day. Following a free kick, the ball bounced around in the box before Elowsson drilled it into the back of the net.
The Vaqueros racked up 29 shots and put 14 on goal. UAPB (1-3-1) goalkeeper
Makaila Riedel made 11 saves in a respectable effort. Frisby took a team-leading six shots and Ortiz took five.
The Vaqueros will be back in action Thursday at 4 p.m. against Prairie View A&M at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex. Attendance is free but fans will need a digital pass to gain entrance. Fans can sign up for the UTRGV Soccer Pass at
