HOUSTON – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 66-57 to the Houston Christian University Huskies on Saturday at Sharp Gym.
The Vaqueros (11-7, 3-4 SLC) were led by graduate student
DK Thorn who scored 15 points. Senior
Cliff Davis added 11 points on three three-pointers with two steals and two assists. Senior
Kwo Agwa added eight points while redshirt junior
Howie Fleming Jr. added eight points with 10 rebounds.
The Huskies (7-11, 4-3 SLC) got 15 points and six rebounds from
Bryson Dawkins.
Demari Williams and
Julian Mackey scored 14 points each.
The Vaqueros jumped out to an 8-5 lead after a four-point play by Thorn, but the Huskies answered with a 9-1 behind seven-straight points from Dawkins. UTRGV then put together a 10-3 run, which featured five different scorers as they regained the 19-17 lead.
The Huskies had another answer to close out the half as they used a 10-5 run to take the lead into halftime.
The Vaqueros came out of the half with a 10-2 run powered by Thorn and Davis. Thorn tied the game with a three-pointer and then Thorn followed with a layup and a three of his own before a hook shot from Davis made it 34-29 UTRGV.
The Huskies used the free throw line to their advantage as they made four free throws to get within 37-36. A three-point play by Thorn pushed UTRGV's lead to 45-38 and then UTRGV took their biggest lead of the game at 50-40 after a Agwa layup with just under 10 minutes to play but the Huskies put together a 12-0 run to take the lead for good.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday when they face the University of the Incarnate Word Cardinals at 4:30 p.m. at McDermott Center.
