NEW ORLEANS, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team extended their win streak to five in a row with a 76-64 victory over the New Orleans Privateers on Saturday at Lakefront Arena.
The Vaqueros (10-4, 2-1 SLC) got 22 points from senior
Hasan Abdul Hakim who added 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season. Senior
Kwo Agwa scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Fifth year guard
K.T. Raimey added 12 points with four three-pointers and redshirt junior
Howie Fleming Jr. added nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists.
The Privateers (2-12, 0-3 SLC) got a game-high 23 points from
James White while he added eight rebounds.
MJ Thomas also recorded a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds and
Dae Dae Hunter chipped in with 11 points.
The Vaqueros took control early as they scored the first 10 points of the game behind a couple of three-pointers from graduate student
DK Thorn and senior
Cliff Davis. After the Privateers got within 10-8, UTRGV knocked down five three's, three of which came from Abdul Hakim, to extend their lead to 25-10.
UTRGV finished the first half with 11 three-pointers in the first half, including back-to-back three's from Raimey that gave them the 43-26 lead and control going into halftime.
The Privateers didn't give in though as they climbed within 47-42 with a 12-4 run to open the second half. UTRGV answered right back with a 9-0 of their own behind a three-pointer and a layup from Agwa to extend their lead to 56-42.
Once again, the Privateers put an 11-2 run together to get within 58-53. The run was capped by a White jumper with 6:43 left in the game and that would be his final basket as the Vaqueros defense clamped down and allowed the offense, including seven from Abdul Hakim, to put the game away.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Monday, Jan. 6 when they visit Southeastern at 6 p.m. at the University Center.
