RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team is back at the UTRGV Fieldhouse Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. Southland Conference (SLC) match against the Northwestern State (NSU) Lady Demons.
This will be the eighth match between the Vaqueros (6-7, 1-1 SLC) and Lady Demons (1-15, 0-2 SLC). Fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Fans can donate five non-perishable food items to receive one free ticket for the match. Donations will benefit the UTRGV Student Food Pantry.
Head-to-Head History
• UTRGV is 5-2 all-time against Northwestern State in a series dating back to 1995. The Vaqueros have won the last three contests between these programs.
• The last match between these teams was on Oct. 17, 2024, won 3-1 by the Vaqueros in Natchitoches, Louisiana. UTRGV swept the season series against NSU in 2024, beating the Lady Demons 3-1 in Edinburg.
• Northwestern State has never won at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. Its last win in the series was in Aug. 2012, a 3-0 neutral match in Lubbock, Texas.
Last Time Out
• UTRGV pushed Stephen F. Austin to the brink in an exciting, competitive 3-2 loss in Nacogdoches (24-26, 25-20, 16-25, 28-26, 15-8). Junior setter
Isabella Costantini tabbed her fourth double-double with 57 assists, the seventh-most assists in a five-set match this season, 15 digs, and a career-high five aces. Freshman outside hitter
Dimitra Nanou had a match and career high 21 kills with a career-high 17 digs. Senior right side
Valentina Sarti Cipriani and junior middle blocker
Aaliyah Snead both had errorless performances, contributing 17 and eight kills on .567 and .471 hitting, respectively. Junior
Nadine Zech had a season-high 16 kills with a career-high tying 16 digs with three blocks. Junior libero
Celianiz Cabranes had 22 digs. The Vaqueros finished the opening week of the SLC season 1-1 after sweeping Lamar on Sept. 24.
• The Lady Demons dropped their 15
th consecutive match, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-23), to Houston Christian at home. Northwestern State also dropped its conference opener last week, 3-0, at Incarnate Word.
