Volleyball Set for Thursday Match at McNeese

LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team is heading to Louisiana for the first time this season for a pair of Southland Conference (SLC) matches, starting with a 6:30 p.m. Thursday contest against the McNeese Cowgirls.   
 
The Vaqueros (12-7, 7-1 SLC) are riding a six-match winning streak and have moved into a tie with Stephen F. Austin at the top of the conference standings. The Cowgirls (6-14, 2-6 SLC) are fighting for a conference tournament spot midway through the SLC season, sitting one match back from the No. 8.  
 
Head-to-Head History
• UTRGV is 2-8 all-time against the Cowgirls in a series dating back to 1990, but have won the last two matches between these squads.   
• The Vaqueros beat McNeese in their lone SLC match last season, earning a swift 3-0 win in Edinburg. 
• This is UTRGV's first match in Lake Charles since Sept. 2013, when the Vaqueros picked up a 3-2 win.  
• UTRGV has not lost to McNeese since Sept. 2011, a 3-0 match in Waco. 
 
Last Time Out 
•  The Vaqueros captured their sixth win in a row with a 3-1 (25-22, 21-25, 25-15, 25-14) victory over New Orleans on Saturday. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Julianna Bryant had a career day, recording 16 kills on .542 hitting with three solo blocks and six total blocks. UTRGV served 17 aces, which is tied for third-most in a four-set match in the nation this season and is tied for third all-time in a match in program history. Junior setter Isabella Costantini led the team with five aces and had her fifth double-double, dishing out 44 assists with 10 digs and three kills. Freshman outside hitter Dimitra Nanou had four aces with 11 kills and 14 digs for her sixth double-double. Sophomore outside hitter Martina Franco had 10 kills with nine digs, three aces and two blocks. Junior libero Celianiz Cabranes tallied 14 digs with three aces, and junior defensive specialist Isa Bento added two aces. 
• McNeese dropped a tough 3-2 match to East Texas A&M in Lake Charles on Saturday. The Cowgirls won the first two sets before being reverse-swept in the 18-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-19, 17-15 battle. McNeese was held to .151 hitting but also limited East Texas A&M to .185 as the teams had nine and 10 blocks, respectively. Kayla Wilson led McNeese with 23 kills while Ava Henry added 12 on .333 hitting. Mary-Alice Dohmann had 24 digs and a team-high four aces.
