Volleyball Takes Momentum on the Road for South Texas Showdown Rematch

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The first round of the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, went to The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team after a 3-1 win Thursday in Edinburg. 
 
Now, it's time for the rematch. The Vaqueros (15-7, 10-1 Southland Conference) and the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders (9-14, 5-6 SLC) will play Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Dugan Wellness Center in Corpus Christi with four crucial points in the Showdown up for grabs. AMCC currently leads the Showdown, 7-3, with four events scored, but four points are up for grabs Saturday as the match winner will earn three points and one additional point will be awarded based on attendance. UTRGV had 1,081 fans at the rivalry match on Thursday. 
 
Head-to-Head History
• UTRGV is 24-30 all-time against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi in a series dating back to 2000. These teams regularly play two matches a year at each other's venues as part of the South Texas Showdown. 
• The Vaqueros have won three of the last five matches in the series after Thursday's 3-1 win at home.  
• The Islanders swept the season series in 2024, winning 3-2 in Edinburg and 3-1 in Corpus. Those wins snapped a five-match winning streak for UTRGV in the series.  
 
Last Time Out 
•  UTRGV won its ninth in a row with a 3-1 (25-13, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23) victory over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Thursday. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Julianna Bryant was the spark for UTRGV, recording 13 kills on .667 hitting with three blocks. Junior outside hitter Nadine Zech had 15 kills on .333 hitting, swinging from the right side. Freshman outside hitter Dimitra Nanou and junior middle blocker Aaliyah Snead added 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Junior setter Isabella Costantini tallied a double-double with 49 assists and 12 digs. Junior libero Celianiz Cabranes had a season-high 29 digs with three assists. 
• Jaeda Rawls-Fletcher paced the Islanders in the loss at UTRGV with 18 kills on .441 hitting. Brooklyn Jaeger had 28 digs. Katelyn Krienke had nine kills on .400 hitting with four blocks.
