Men's Basketball Falls Late at Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team fell 74-67 to the Missouri State Bears on Saturday at Great Southern Bank Arena.
 
The Vaqueros (2-3) had four players in double-figure scoring with junior Koree Cotton leading the way with 13 points with five rebounds and four assists. Junior Filip Brankovic scored 11 points on 5-of-6 shooting. Graduate student Marvin McGhee III scored 10 points with nine rebounds and senior Zae Blake scored 10 points with five rebounds. 
 
The Bears (3-2) got a game-high 28 points from Keith Palek III to go along with nine rebounds and five assists. Zaxton King scored 12 points while Kobi Willliams added 11 points and Michael Osei-Bonsu chipped in with 10 points. 
 
Most of the game was back-and-forth with the second half scoring starting on a Brankovic layup. Later, senior Kwo Agwa converted on a three-point play to give the Vaqueros the 38-34 lead with 16:23 to play. 
 
The Bears got a three-pointer from Palek III to get within 38-37 but UTRGV got layups from Cotton and McGhee III to push their lead to 42-37. The Vaqueros took their lead to 54-45 a layup and a three-pointer from Cotton.
 
The Vaqueros put together an 8-0 run behind bookend buckets from McGhee III to push their lead to 65-52 but the Bears closed out the game on a 22-2 run holding the Vaqueros to just one basket in the final five minutes to seal the victory.
 
The Vaqueros and Bears traded baskets over the first five and a half minutes of the game, with the Vaqueros leading 8-7 on a 3-pointer Filip Brankovic. The Bears followed with an 11-2 run to go up 18-10, but the Vaqueros scored the next 14 points, including 3-pointers by graduate student Zae Blake and Brankovic, to go up 24-18.
 
After the Bears went on an 8-2 run to tie the game at 26, both teams exchanged baskets with the Vaqueros taking the halftime lead on a Kye Dickson dunk in the final minutes of the half.
 
UTRGV continues this three-game road trip on Monday at 7 p.m. at No. 8 Illinois in a game that can be seen on Big Ten Network.
