RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's basketball sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz had a career day and two Vaqueros tabbed double-doubles Friday to help UTRGV tie the program record for scoring in a 110-36 victory over the Arlington Baptist (ABU) Patriots at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
UTRGV (2-0, 0-0 Southland Conference) also scored 110 points when it beat the Patriots in 2024, but by holding ABU to 36 points, the Vaqueros set a new program record for margin of victory, besting last year's difference by one point. Lorenz scored a career-high 25 points on a career-high seven three-pointers. Senior forward
Charlotte O'Keefe and junior guard
Jalayah Ingram both recorded double-doubles. O'Keefe had 15 rebounds, 12 points, three assists, two blocks and two steals. Ingram scored 15 and dished out 10 assists with three steals and five rebounds. Freshmen
Chazlyn Dettor and
Elise Horne both set career highs with 11 points each. Horne had nine rebounds.
Paris Beard led Arlington Baptist (1-3) with 11 points while
Aniya Jackson added eight with two steals.
Redshirt junior guard
Erin Maguire got the scoring started with a three in the first 10 seconds of the game. The Patriots did a good job of sticking around and answering when UTRGV created a bit of separation, knocking down some early three-pointers to take a lead at 10-8.
The Vaqueros turned to the deep ball to take control of the first quarter. Lorenz nailed threes on back-to-back possessions and Huhn added another to spark a 9-0 run that built UTRGV's lead to 25-15 after two nice offensive possessions in the paint by O'Keefe.
UTRGV held a 25-17 lead after the first and quickly expanded the advantage as it opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run, keeping the Patriots off the board for the first 4:15 of the frame. The Vaqueros started to win battles in the paint consistently as they built the lead, aided by four consecutive points from Horne for her first buckets of her collegiate career. Lorenz and Huhn kept knocking down threes and UTRGV led, 51-26, at halftime.
The Vaqueros played tremendous defense in the third quarter, holding the Patriots to just four points. UTRGV was sharp on offense too, using great court vision and long passes to open a 72-30 lead after the frame. The Vaqueros played clean defense, stacked up defensive rebounds and finished at the basket with ease. O'Keefe secured a double-double in the third quarter.
UTRGV was on fire to start the fourth. O'Keefe and Romer both snagged steals and took the turnovers straight to the hoop. The Vaqueros hit four quick threes, including two from freshman forward
Rylie Whitehair – who also had a block – to grow the advantage to 90-31. Lorenz drained two more threes late in the game to cap her solid day.
The Vaqueros held the Patriots to 10 points in the second half and forced 18 turnovers.
UTRGV will be back in action Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest at Abilene Christian.
