MALIBU, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team was defeated, 82-60, Wednesday by the North Dakota State (NDSU) Bison, a team ranked No. 22 in the College Insider Mid-Major Poll, in their first game of the Malibu Classic, hosted by Pepperdine at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Junior guard
Jalayah Ingram recorded her second consecutive 20-point performance, scoring 22 points and shooting 10-for-12 from the free throw line to pace UTRGV (4-6, 1-1 Southland Conference). Redshirt junior guard
Erin Maguire added 13 points with a pair of threes and a career-high four steals.
NDSU (10-2, 0-0 Summit League) had three in double-digit scoring.
Karrington Asp led the way with 22 points and 12 rebounds.
Marisa Frost scored 14 with three steals and
Avery Koenen added 11 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The game started with the teams swapping scores in a back-and-forth first quarter. The Vaqueros were sharp from behind the arc in the opening minutes, with freshman forward
Chazlyn Dettor and Maguire sinking threes to have UTRGV on top by a slim margin at 8-7. Junior forward
Ivy Brown hit back-to-back layups, including one through contact for the three-point play, to even things up at 13-13 midway through the quarter. But the Bison defense held UTRGV scoreless to take a 17-13 lead at the end of the frame.
Ingram got the Vaqueros back on the board with a pair of driving layups in the second quarter. Maguire notched a steal that turned into a three from junior guard
Madison Huhn to cut the deficit to 21-20 with seven minutes remaining in the first half. NDSU used a pair of 6-0 scoring runs to take control of the contest, using solid rebounding to stymie UTRGV's offense. The Bison recorded 27 rebounds to UTRGV's 14 in the first half and took a 42-28 lead into the locker room at half.
The Bison used a big third quarter to create a 20-point cushion. UTRGV started the second half strong, knocking down deep shot from sophomore guard
Kayla Lorenz and a jumper from Ingram. The Vaqueros were within 10 points late in the quarter, but NDSU closed the third on a 10-0 scoring run to take a 65-45 advantage to the fourth.
UTRGV continued to battle despite the deficit. Ingram and Maguire drove hard to the basket and freshman forward
Elise Horne clocked developmental minutes and matched the physicality of the Bison down the stretch. But NDSU's size and success on the boards kept the Bison in control.
UTRGV will play its third game in four days as the Vaqueros take on the South Dakota Coyotes Thursday at 6 p.m. (CT) back at Firestone Fieldhouse.
