RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team dished out a season-high 32 assists en route to a 109-51 victory over the College of Biblical Studies to close out the non-conference on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
The Vaqueros (5-6) got points from everyone that played with six players in double-figure scoring. Graduate student
Marvin McGhee III led the Vaqueros with 15 points while freshman
Julien Gomez scored a career-high 13 points with three assists. Sophomore
Dane Christensen recorded his second double-double with 11 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore
Jaylen Washington scored 11 points with a career-high eight assists and freshman
Demarris Winters scored a career-high 11 points with a career-high five assists. Redshirt junior
Marshal Destremau recorded his first-career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The Ambassadors (2-13) got a game-high 20 points from
Trayvon Martinez and got nine points from
Marquice Scott and eight points from
Alvin Kay.
The Vaqueros also grabbed a season-high 52 rebounds and shot a season-best 57.1% (40-70) from the floor while shooting 42.4% from three-point range.
The Vaqueros set the tone early from beyond the arc as Destremau and McGhee III knocked down three-pointers for the early 6-0 lead. McGhee's three not only helped kick start the offense but put him over the 1,000-career points mark.
After a jumper from Kay that made it 9-5 UTRGV, the Vaqueros went on a 15-0 run that featured a pair of threes from Winters and graduate student
Zae Blake and was punctuated by a Destremau dunk that made it 24-5 with 11 minutes to play.
UTRGV got a couple of more threes from Blake and junior
Koree Cotton that pushed UTRGV's lead to 32-9 and then later in the half a three-pointer from McGhee III capped an 8-3 run making it 44-14 in favor of UTRGV.
The Ambassadors got a couple of three-pointers from Kendall Hamilton and Darion Ramos, but UTRGV scored the final eight points of the half to take the 54-20 lead into the locker room.
The Vaqueros got a couple of three-pointers from McGhee III in the opening minutes of the second half as they extended their lead to 62-23.
Christensen hit a three to start another 16-8 run for UTRGV that made it 80-37. The Ambassadors followed with a 6-0 run, all of which came on free throws, to get within 80-43 but the Vaqueros kept their foot on the pedal to keep the game out of reach.
The Vaqueros return to Southland Conference play when they host New Orleans on Dec. 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
