NACOGDOCHES – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team dropped their Southland Conference (SLC) opener 73-60 to the Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks on Wednesday at William R. Johnson Coliseum.
The Vaqueros (2-5, 1-0 SLC) got a career-high 15 points from sophomore
Jaylen Washington, who went 7-of-9 from the floor while adding seven rebounds. Junior
Koree Cotton added 11 points with eight rebounds and three assists. Freshman
Julien Gomez scored eight points while going 4-of-4 from the free throw line.
The Lumberjacks (6-2, 1-0 SLC) had four in double-figure scoring with Narit Chotikavanic leading the way with 13 points. Lateef Patrick Jr. score 12 points with six rebounds. Ahamed Mohammed and Chrishawn Christmas added 11 points each.
The Vaqueros and Lumberjacks were engaged in a defensive battle in the first half. UTRGV took its only lead of the game on a three-pointer from graduate student
Marvin McGhee III that made it 3-2 but the Lumberjacks went on a 15-5 run to take the 20-8 lead.
Washington ignited the Vaqueros with back-to-back buckets, one of which was a three, to get within 20-13. The Vaqueros got another jumper from Washington and a layup from Cotton that started an 13-5 run that got them within 27-26 as the Lumberjacks took the lead into the half.
SFA got the scoring started in the second half with buckets from Kam Burton and Jerald Colonel that pushed their lead to 34-26. UTRGV got layups from McGhee III and redshirt junior
Always Wright that got them within 39-32 but the Lumberjacks answered with a 10-2 run to make it 49-34 with 11:26 to play.
The Vaqueros fought to cut into the Lumberjacks lead as they got layups from sophomore
Dane Christensen and Cotton that made it 57-45 and then Christensen knocked down a three and a couple of free throws to get within 59-50 with five minutes left.
That was as close as the Vaqueros would get after a 6-0 run by the Lumberjacks put the game out of reach.
