LUBBOCK – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team picked up it's first win, 4-3 over the Lubbock Christian (LCU) Chaparrals at the McLeod Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros (1-6) clinched the doubles point after the duo of sophomores
Paolo Bonaguero and
Will Roberts won 6-2 on court two. On court one, sophomore
Santiago Serrano and freshman
Loic Young Kriegel picked up their second victory of the day, winning 6-4 to give the Vaqueros the doubles point. The Chaparrals won a 7-5 bout on court three to round out doubles competition.
With UTRGV down 2-1, the Vaqueros picked up three singles wins in the span of 10 minutes to clinch the match.
Roberts won a back-and-forth first set 6-4 and powered through a surge from LCU's
Kelly Giese in the second set to capture a 6-3 straight-set victory on No. 1.
About two minutes later, Young stamped his comeback in the second set, winning five straight games to claim a 6-1, 7-5 victory on No. 2.
About eight minutes later, Serrano clinched the match in a back-and-forth battle with LCU's
Jordan Georgiev. Serrano, having won his three previous matches today, continued his hot streak, winning 7-6 (7:3), 6-4 on No. 4.
The Chaparrals picked up wins on courts three, five, and six to keep the match close.
Up next, UTRGV will host its home opener on Sunday, Feb. 9 against Prairie View A&M as part of a doubleheader with the women's tennis team starting at 10 a.m.
