RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team defeated the Texas A&M-Kingsville (TAMUK) Javelinas, 6-1, Saturday in their season opener at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.
UTRGV (1-0) started off strong picking up the doubles point. The Vaqueros swept doubles with sophomore
Rhea Makesar and freshman
Mariia Bakhtina earning a commanding 6-2 win in the first flight. The No. 2 duo of sophomores
Madeleine Joffe and
Hitakamya Narwal won their match, 6-2, to secure the 1-0 lead. In the third match, junior
Valentina Urraco and senior
Kristal Dule picked up a 6-3 to complete the sweep.
Dule dominated the No.1 singles match, only giving up two games as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win. Narwal and Bakhtina captured straight set wins in flights four and six respectively, to clinch the team victory with UTRGV leading 4-0.
Makesar won her match to extend the lead to 5-0. The Javelinas got on the board with a win on the fifth court from
Annalena Noll in a competitive matchup.
The match ended in a three set battle that saw Urraco come out on top. Urraco quickly won the first set, 6-2, but Kingsville's
Annika Andersson Gomez came back to take the second set. In a tight third set Urraco took a 5-2 lead before Gomez fought back to trim it 5-4, but Urraco held off the comeback to win the set.
UTRGV visits St. Mary's Thursday at 2 p.m. in San Antonio.
