Baseball Earns Series Victory Over Southern Illinois

RIO GRANDE VALLEY –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team earned a series victory over the Southern Illinois University (SIU) Salukis by winning the rubber game 3-2 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium.
 
After drawing 1,087 to this game, UTRGV finished with a weekend attendance of 7,311.
 
Salukis (1-2) starter Meade Johnson (0-1) didn't allow a hit over the first 3.2 innings. After senior Steven Lancia reached on an error, though, sophomore Easton Moomau came up with an infield single and then senior Hank Warren lined an RBI-single to left. After a walk loaded the bases, graduate student and PSJA alum Jacob Sanchez hit a 2-run single to give the Vaqueros (2-1) a 3-1 lead.
 
Making his first start batting cleanup, Moomau went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
 
In his collegiate debut, freshman Harrison Thayer (1-0) earned the win by pitching 4.0 scoreless innings, striking out four while allowing two hits and one walk.
 
Junior Steven Oliva earned his first save by holding the lead in the ninth despite allowing a home run to John Lemm.
 
Senior Jacob Limas started and pitched 4.0 innings, allowing an unearned run on four hits and three walks while striking out four.
 
UTRGV faces No. 20 Dallas Baptist on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Globe Life Field, the home of the Texas Rangers. For those unable to attend, Dallas Baptist is offering an audio-only broadcast via the Patriot Broadcasting Network with pregame coverage beginning at 11:15 a.m.
