DALLAS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team fell 7-0 to the #52 Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs at the Styslinger/Altec Tennis Complex.
The Vaqueros (1-6) showed fight in the doubles point as the pair of freshman
Eduardo Menezes and sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro powered to a 6-3 win on court three. On court one, sophomore
Santiago Serrano and freshman
Loic Young Kriegel fell in a hard-fought 7-5 battle. SMU (8-6) earned the point with a 6-2 win on court two.
The Mustangs secured the victory with straight-set wins on the lower five singles courts. However, the Vaqueros found themselves in a tight battle on flight one.
Junior
Sam Whitehead won a tight first set over #94 Jerry Barton that featured. a grueling tiebreak, 7-6 (8:6). Whitehead displayed an impressive array of backhands and volleys in the tiebreaker capping off set point with a volley to Barton's deep backhand corner to put the set away with a huge overhead.
Barton rallied to take the second set 6-3 and force a 10-point tiebreaker. Whitehead held a quick advantage in the tiebreaker but couldn't overcome Barton's comeback as he won the tiebreak, 10:8.
Up next, UTRGV will visit No. 18 Baylor and face no. 20 Illinois in a doubleheader on Saturday, March 1 in Waco. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 10 a.m.
