LAKE CHARLES, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's basketball team dropped their final road game of the season 100-65 to the McNeese Cowboys on Monday at the Legacy Center.
 
The Vaqueros (14-15, 6-12 SLC) were led by redshirt junior Howie Fleming Jr. who scored 18 points while graduate student DK Thorn scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three assists. Fifth year K.T. Raimey and junior Trey Miller each added 11 points. 
 
The Cowboys (23-6, 17-1 SLC) had six players in double-figure scoring led by DJ Richards and Christian Shumate who scored 19 points each. Quadir Copeland and Sincere Parker each added 12 while Brandon Murray and Javohn Garcia both added 10 points. 
 
The Vaqueros wanted to set a tone early and did just that behind three-pointers from Fleming Jr, Miller, Thorn, and Raimey as they jumped out to the 12-6 lead. Miller knocked down another jumper and Thorn found success in the paint with a layup that made it 16-11. 
 
After back-to-back buckets by Fleming Jr., the Cowboys went on a 20-0 run to take the 41-20 lead but the Vaqueros weren't done as Raimey knocked down a three-pointer to kick start an 14-2 run to close out the half that featured a pair of Raimey three-pointers and eight points from Thorn. 
 
The Vaqueros started the scoring in the second half as Thorn knocked down a jumper to make it 43-36. After the Cowboys pushed the lead to 49-36, Miller made back-to-back layups to get within 49-40 but the Cowboys opened their lead with a 10-0 run to put the game out of reach. 
 
Fleming Jr. converted a three-point play with just under 14 minutes in the game to make it 61-45 but that would be as close as the Vaqueros would get the rest of the way. 
 
The Vaqueros are back in action on Saturday when they host New Orleans at 4:30 p.m. at the UTRGV Fieldhouse.
