O'Keefe Breaks Second Program Record as Women's Basketball Falls at SFA

NACOGDOCHES, Texas – Junior forward Charlotte O'Keefe claimed her second program record Thursday, becoming the single-season rebounds leader as The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team fell, 87-67, to the Stephen F. Austin (SFA) Ladyjacks at the William R. Johnson Coliseum.

In the third quarter, O'Keefe reeled in her seventh rebound of the night, increasing her career total at the time to 295 to pass Madison Northcutt, who accumulated 294 in 2018-19, for the program record. O'Keefe finished the game with nine rebounds, 12 points and a season-high tying five assists. Northcutt's record was set in 33 games while O'Keefe broke the record in her 24th game. She currently has 297 rebounds this season and 705 in her career, becoming the first player in program history to surpass 700 career rebounds.

Freshman guard Kayla Lorenz recorded her second consecutive 15-point game to pace UTRGV's (11-13, 6-7 Southland Conference) offense and made four three-pointers. Graduate student G/F Kade Hackerott scored 14 points with nine rebounds. Senior guard Tierra Trotter and sophomore guard Madison Huhn scored eight points each and Trotter added five assists.

Harmanie Dominguez led SFA (19-5, 9-4 SLC) with 28 points and made five three-pointers. Makana Gardner had a double-double with 15 points and had 10 rebounds. Ashlyn Traylor-Walker also had a double-double with 13 points, 10 assists and five rebounds.

SFA shot efficiently in the opening quarter and quickly jumped out to a double-digit lead. The Vaqueros were rebounding well and playing inside-out, creating a lane for Trotter to finish a good driving layup. Spreading out the defense also gave Lorenz an open look at a three from the wing, and she knocked it down. But SFA shot 75% from the field and held a 22-12 lead after the first quarter.

The Ladyjacks' explosive offense rolled on to start the second quarter, resulting in a 34-17 deficit for UTRGV. The Vaqueros responded with five unanswered points backed by a steal from graduate student Chynell Mitchell that turned into Huhn's second three of the quarter to create some momentum. UTRGV's defense forced a couple of scoreless droughts for SFA, but 18 first-half points from Dominguez had the Ladyjacks leading 44-32 at half. Freshman guard Elizabeth Romer beat the halftime buzzer for a corner three-pointer.

In the third quarter, the Vaqueros had success driving to the basket and saw Lorenz knock down another three. But the Ladyjacks continued to shoot the lights out and increased their lead to 19 points before UTRGV forced some turnovers and started to chip away. A logo three to beat the quarter buzzer had SFA leading 71-53 heading to the fourth.

UTRGV continued to battle in the fourth. The Vaqueros started the quarter with a 5-0 run and saw Trotter fire up the troops with a three-point play. Suddenly, the deficit was trimmed to 11 as the defense kept SFA scoreless for the first three minutes of the frame. The Ladyjacks answered with an 8-0 run and stayed in control through the final minutes to seal the victory.

The Vaqueros will be back in action Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lamar.
