RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team clinched a series victory over the Southland Conference preseason favorite Lamar Cardinals by winning the middle game of the series 2-0 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 3,345.
This was the 13
th-largest crowd to ever watch a UTRGV baseball game at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, where the Vaqueros have played since 2002.
Junior Los Fresnos alum
Víctor Loa (2-1) started with four hitless innings before finishing with 5.0 innings of 1-hit ball. He struck out seven, including five batters looking, while walking two.
The Vaqueros (6-2, 2-0 SLC) gave Loa all the run support he needed in the second. Senior

Armani Raygoza opened the inning with singles against
Riely Hunsaker (1-1) to put runners on the corners, setting up an RBI-fielder's choice by graduate student PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez to make the score 1-0.
The Vaqueros added an insurance run in the seventh, when with Sanchez at third and junior
Rene Galván at first and one out, junior
Damien Whitfield hit a sharp grounder to bring home Sanchez and make the score 2-0.

Harrison Thayer struck out five in 4.0 scoreless innings of relief for his first save.
UTRGV and Lamar (9-3, 0-2 SLC) complete this 3-game series Sunday at 12 p.m. at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in a game presented by Main Event. Fans will receive all you can play wristbands, courtesy of Main Event, good from Sunday through Thursday. It's also Military Appreciation Day, sponsored by 5x5 Brewing Company. The first 500 fans in attendance will receive a UTRGV camouflage hat. Members of the United States Armed Forces receive free general admission with a military ID. Additionally, all Sunday home games feature the Family Fun Day: 4 for $44 promotion which includes four general admission tickets, four drinks, and four hot dogs for $44.
