RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's tennis team opened Southland Conference play with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) Lions in the Southland Conference opener at the Orville Cox Tennis Center.

Yaiza Vazquez won a tight 6-4 match on court two. On court three, sophomores
Madeleine Joffe and
Hitakamya Narwal went toe-to-toe with their Southeastern counterparts before picking up a break to win the match 7-5. Southeastern (7-2) picked up a 6-0 win on court one.
With the match tied at 1-1, the Vaqueros slammed the door winning four of the remainig five singles matches in straight-sets and taking the final singles match after a grueling 10-point tiebreaker.
On court one, Vazquez jumped out to a huge advantage winning the first set 6-0 and carried the momentum into the second set winning 6-2.
On court five, Narwal followed suit picking up a huge 6-3 first set victory before powering her way to a 6-1 second set win.
Dule continued the hot streak for the Vaqueros with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 win on court three to clinch the match.
Joffe cruised in the first set to the tune of 6-2 before winning a back-and-forth 7-5 battle in the second to earn the victory on court four.
Sophomore
Rhea Makesar wound up in a tight battle on court two winning the first set 6-4 before falling in a hard-nosed 7-6 (7:3) second set. In a grueling tiebreaker, Makesar displayed poise and versatility as she downed her Southeastern counterpart 1-0 (10:8)
Up next, UTRGV will host McNeese in a Southland Conference match on Monday at 11 a.m. at the Orville Cox Tennis Center. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
