RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team defeated the UC Riverside (UCR) Highlanders 5-2 at the SRC Tennis Courts.
The Vaqueros (3-13) secured the doubles point when the pair of freshman
Eduardo Menezes and sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro cruised to a 6-2 win on court three. On court two, sophomore
Paolo Bonaguro and junior
Sam Whitehead won in convincing fashion as they secured the set 6-1. Sophomore
Santiago Serrano and freshman
Loic Young Kriegel led 5-3 on court one before the match was called.
Freshman
Isaac Smyth dominated the Highlanders'
Ryan Huynh 6-0, 6-0 on court six to push the UTRGV lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Will Roberts extended the Vaqueros lead to 3-0 as he battled in a 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 win on court five. In the deciding set, Roberts grabbed the crucial break at 3-1 before holding serve the rest of the way.
With UTRGV leading 3-1, Serrano clinched the team victory after a grueling 6-3, 6-7 (14:12), 7-5 win on court three. In the deciding set, Serrano and his UCR counterpart went back-and-forth until Serrano broke his opponent's serve at 6-5 to win.
On court four, Young split the first two sets with his opponent 6-7 (9:7), 7-5. Then, with the deciding set knotted at 2-2, Young won four unanswered games to secure a 6-2 third set victory.
The Highlanders (2-10) picked up wins on courts one and two to keep the match close.
Up next, UTRGV will host the University of Texas Permian Basin at 2 p.m. in the second match of a doubleheader with the women's tennis team. Admission is free and the public is encouraged to attend.
