NEW ORLEANS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team won its Southland Conference (SLC) opener Saturday, 5-2, over the New Orleans (UNO) Privateers at the Privateer Tennis Center in New Orleans.
UTRGV (6-13, 1-0 SLC) started strong by taking the doubles point. The No. 3 team of sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro and freshman
Eduardo Menezes quickly captured a 6-1 win. In the second flight, redshirt junior
Sam Whitehead and sophomore
Paolo Bonaguro secured the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 win.
Singles action went back-and-forth as the teams battled. Freshman
Loic Young Kriegel extended UTRGV's lead to 2-0 with a solid 6-1, 6-4 win in the fourth flight. New Orleans (8-5, 0-1 SLC) got one back with a win on the fifth court.
Menezes picked up the first conference win of his collegiate career with a good three-set fight. He took the first set and bounced back nicely from dropping the second to secure the 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win. Again, the Privateers answered with a three-set win of their own in the third flight.
Whitehead clinched the Vaqueros victory at 4-2 with a gritty three-setter in the No. 1 flight. The heavyweight battle with
Marc Mail saw all three sets go deep as Whitehead outdueled his opponent for the 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 win.
Isqueiro capped the big day with a come-from-behind win in three sets in the second flight. He responded nicely after dropping the first set to
Matthew Armbruster to capture a 6-7, 7-5, 6-3 win.
Up next for the Vaqueros is the Southland Conference opener Saturday at 3 p.m. at New Orleans.
