RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team learned on Tuesday that sophomore
Ivo Isqueiro has been named the Southland Conference (SLC) Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
Isqueiro went 5-0 between singles and doubles to lead UTRGV (8-13, 2-0 SLC) to a 3-0 week, extending the program's winning streak to six matches for the first time since 1992. The run includes a pair of SLC victories to open the conference season.
His week started with a tough come-from-behind 6-7 (3:7), 7-5, 6-3 win over
Matthew Armbruster from New Orleans in the No. 2 spot. On Sunday, Isqueiro played in the No. 1 spot at Dillard and picked up a 7-5, 6-2 win against
Yassine Benjemma. He was leading 6-3, 4-1 in a No. 2 match at Nicholls but the contest went unfinished when the team victory was secured. Isqueiro has won three consecutive singles matches and is 5-9 on the season.
Isqueiro is on a five-match winning streak in doubles with freshman
Eduardo Menezes. The duo went 3-0 over the weekend with 6-1 wins at New Orleans, Dillard and Nicholls in the No. 3 spot. Isqueiro is 8-4 in doubles this spring.
The Vaqueros will be back in action April 5 in a home match against Lamar.
