FORT WORTH –The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team dropped a 4-0 game Wednesday to the TCU Horned Frogs at Lupton Stadium.
The Vaqueros (17-7) used eight pitchers in the midweek game. Freshman
Harrison Thayer made his first career start and pitched three scoreless innings with two strikeouts, allowing just two hits and one walk. Senior
Robert Bonilla (1-1) took the loss after pitching 1.2 innings and giving up three earned runs on three hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Junior
Rex Henderson threw one inning and allowed one earned run on one hit and two walks with one strikeout. The Vaqueros pitching staff combined to strike out seven Horned Frogs.
The Vaqueros were sat down in order in the first three innings. Sophomore
Easton Moomau notched the first UTRGV hit of the contest in the fourth, but he was left stranded.
The Horned Frogs (19-7) got runners on early and often, but the Vaqueros stood tall defensively. They used a 1-6-5 pickoff to end a threat in the second, then Thayer recorded back-to-back strikeouts, one swinging and one looking, to end the third and leave one stranded.
UTRGV got something brewing in the top of the fifth as junior
Thomas Williams and senior
Hank Warren both tabbed two-out singles to opposite sides of the field. But a groundout to third kept the Vaqueros off the board. TCU found itself in a similar situation in the home half of the fifth, with two runners in scoring position and two down.
Sawyer Strosnider ripped a two-RBI triple off the left field wall and
Cole Cramer followed with a RBI single to give the Horned Frogs a 3-0 lead. Junior
Caden Wanless faced one batter and drew a groundout to end the frame.
TCU extended the lead to 4-0 with a bases-loaded fielder's choice by
Brody Green in the sixth. The Horned Frogs had the bases loaded in the seventh, but redshirt senior
Anthony Tejada forced a flyout to escape unscathed.
Moomau, Williams, Warren and senior
Steven Lancia recorded one hit each. Warren went 1-for-2 and drew a walk.
Zack James (3-0) earned the win for TCU after pitching five scoreless innings with three hits and four strikeouts.
Up next for the Vaqueros is a Southland Conference (SLC) and South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, series at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi starting Friday at 6 p.m.
