NEW ORLEANS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team scored 10 unanswered runs during the final four innings to come from behind and beat the New Orleans Privateers 10-5 on Friday at Maestri Field, marking the Vaqueros' fifth-straight win.
The Vaqueros (9-2, 4-0 SLC) entered the series with an NCAA RPI of three while the Privateers (7-5, 2-2 SLC) rank 78
th. The Southland Conference ranks fifth among conferences, the best outside the Power 4.
Down 5-0 in the sixth, the Vaqueros broke through on a solo home run by graduate student PSJA alum
Jacob Sanchez to make the score 5-1. Sanchez now has a team-high tying three home runs.
The Vaqueros tied the game with four runs in the seventh. With runners at second and third and one out, sophomore
Armani Raygoza hit an RBI-single. Sanchez followed with a sacrifice fly. After a single by junior
Rene Galván, senior
Hank Warren hit a 2-run triple to tie the game at 5.
Graduate student Vela alum
Isaac Lopez led off the eighth by launching a home run off
Sawyer Toney (1-1) to give the Vaqueros the lead. Lopez now has two home runs this season and 18 in his career, tied for the eighth-highest career total in program history. Later in the inning, freshman
Cameron Carter added an RBI-single to make the score 7-5.
The Vaqueros added three runs in the ninth on an error, a Lopez sacrifice fly, and an RBI-single by sophomore
Easton Moomau.
Lopez finished 3-for-5, his third 3-hit outing in eight games. Sanchez, Raygoza, Galván, Warren, Moomau, and senior
Steven Lancia all finished with two hits.
That made a winner of junior
Wyatt Wiatrek (2-0), who struck out five in 4.0 innings of relief.
The Privateers put runners at second and third with two outs in the third, setting up a 2-run double by
Tristan Moore to make the score 2-0.
In the fourth,
Collin Loupe hit a 1-out triple and then
Diego Villescas hit an RBI-double. One hit later,
Matt Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-0.
The Privateers added a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by
Karson Evans, making the score 5-0.
UTRGV and New Orleans play the middle game of this series on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game that will be broadcast domestically on
ESPN+ and internationally via
Southland International.
