AUSTIN – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls for the sixth week in a row, fell to the No. 1 Texas Longhorns 11-4 on Tuesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Vaqueros (25-11) were held to two hits over the first five innings. In the sixth, though, freshman

Isaac Lopez led off with infield-singles. Sophomore
Armani Raygoza followed with an RBI-single to knock out starter
Kade Bing (2-0) and bring the Vaqueros to within 11-1.
In the seventh, juniors
Thomas Williams and
Rene Galván hit one-out singles. One out later, Carter hit a fly ball to left field that was dropped by
Easton Winfield, allowing two runs to score. Lopez followed with an RBI-single to make the score 11-4.
Williams went 3-for-4 with a run scored. Lopez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Longhorns (30-5) started the first with a pair of long at-bats, with eight foul balls among 20 pitches leading to two walks against senior
Jacob Limas (1-2).
Jalin Flores followed with a 2-run double. Two outs later,
Casey Borba hit an RBI-double to put the Longhorns up 3-0.
The Longhorns loaded the bases with nobody out in the second.
Rylan Galván walked to force-in a run. One out later,
Will Gasparino hit a 2-run single. One batter later, with the bases reloaded, Borba walked to bring home another run and put the Longhorns up 7-0.
The Longhorns loaded the bases with nobody out in the third. Galván was plunked to force-in a run. One out later, Gasparino hit an RBI-single to put the Longhorns up 9-0.
In the fifth,
Kimble Schuessler led off by getting plunked and Galván followed with an RBI-double. Pinch-runner
Oliver Service moved to third on a passed ball. One out later, Gasparino hit a sacrifice fly to put the Longhorns up 11-0.
UTRGV opens a crucial three-game Southland Conference series at Southeastern Thursday at 6 p.m. Southeastern is one of three teams tied for first at 14-4 (.778). UTRGV, which has played three more games, is half a game ahead at 16-5, but slightly behind in winning percentage (.762). The winner of this series will increase its odds of earning home field advantage in the Southland Conference Tournament.
