HAMMOND, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls for the sixth week in a row, fell to the Southeastern Lions 12-1 in seven innings on Friday at Pat Kenelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
The Vaqueros (25-13, 16-7 SLC) scored their run against
Luke Lirette (4-1) in the sixth, putting runners on the corners with two outs to set up an RBI-single by sophomore
Easton Moomau, making the score 6-1.
Moomau finished 2-for-3. Senior
Hank Warren also went 2-for-3.
Dane Watts hit a 2-run home run in the second off graduate student
Angelo Cabral (4-1) to put the Lions (31-8, 16-4 SLC) up 2-0.
That was it until the fifth, when the Lions loaded the bases on walks, setting up a
Ryan Brome sacrifice fly. One out later,
Conner O'Neal hit an RBI-single and then
Mo Little hit a 2-run single to put the Lions up 6-0.
Up 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth,
Ben Robichaux reached on a bunt-single, moved to second on a wild pitch, to third on a fly ball, and later scored on a squeeze play by
Giovanni Licciardi to make the score 7-1.
In the seventh, Watts forced-in a run with a bases-loaded walk and then Robichaux hit a grand slam to end the game.
UTRGV and Southeastern close out this three-game series on Saturday at 1 p.m. on
ESPN+.
