#4 Men's Tennis Drops Tight Quarterfinals Match to #5 New Orleans

THIBODAUX, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) #4 men's tennis team dropped a tough 4-1 quarterfinals match to the #5 New Orleans (UNO) Privateers Thursday in the Southland Conference (SLC) Tennis Championships at the Thibodaux Regional Sports Complex.

In a doubles session that saw two rain delays, the Privateers (13-7) secured the 1-0 lead. UTRGV's No. 1 duo of sophomore Santiago Serrano and freshman Loic Young Kriegel rolled to a 6-1 win, but the matches on the second and third courts were much tighter. On Court 3, sophomore Ivo Isqueiro and freshman Eduardo Menezes bounced back from an early 0-2 deficit to lead 5-2. But UNO's team of Julian Franzmann/Marc Mail answered with five consecutive games of their own to even the session with a 7-5 win.

The battle in the second flight between UTRGV's redshirt junior Sam Whitehead and sophomore Paolo Bonaguro and the Privateers duo of Jay Temming/Joseph Townes needed a tiebreaker to be decided. The Vaqueros were sharp to come from behind late and force the extra frame, but the Privateers walked away with the 7-6 (8:6) win to capture the doubles point.

Mail and Franzmann extended UNO's lead to 3-0 with straight set wins of identical 6-4, 6-0 scores on the first and third courts. Then, the teams were hit with the third rain delay of the match, giving the Vaqueros over an hour to reset their bodies and minds.

UTRGV (10-15) pushed all four singles matches still playing to three sets. Isqueiro got the Vaqueros on the board with an impressive comeback win, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the second flight. Sophomore Will Roberts showed incredible resilience on Court 5, fighting off two match points down 5-1 in the third to storm back and send the deciding frame to a tiebreaker. His match went unfinished with Roberts holding a 2:1 lead in the tiebreaker.

The Privateers clinched their spot in the semifinal with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win by Sep de Visser in the sixth flight.
