RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association polls for the seventh week in a row, beat the McNeese Cowboys 5-3 on Sunday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 1,134 at UTRGV Baseball Stadium, extending its program record season attendance to 66,976.
The Vaqueros (28-15, 19-8 SLC) trailed 3-2 entering the bottom of the seventh. Senior
Steven Lancia hit a leadoff single against
Jake Blackwell (3-2). One out later, junior
Hank Warren walked and junior
Rene Galván singled to load the bases. Junior
Damien Whitfield then hit a go-ahead 2-run single. Graduate student Vela alum
Isaac Lopez followed with a bunt single on which Galván scored to put the Vaqueros up 5-3.
Lancia finished 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
That made a winner of freshman
Harrison Thayer (3-2), who struck out four in 4.0 innings of relief while allowing one run on three hits and one walk.
The Vaqueros led early, going up 2-1 on first inning solo home runs by sophomores
Armani Raygoza and
Easton Moomau.
The Cowboys (30-10, 17-7 SLC) tied the game in the second on a home run by
Easton Dowell before loading the bases with one out. Senior
Jacob Limas got
Mack Brousseau to ground into a double play. Limas went on to retire the last 10 hitters he faced while pitching 5.0 innings and striking out four without allowing a walk.
The next hit in the game by either team came in the seventh when
Simon Larranaga hit a leadoff home run to give the Cowboys a 3-2 lead.
The Cowboys initially scored in the first on a two-out single by
Larry Edwards Jr. to go up 1-0.
UTRGV plays its next six games on the road, starting with a two-game series at Texas Tech on Tuesday at 6 p.m. on
