RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team, the No. 2 seed in the Southland Conference Tournament which is receiving votes in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll for the 10
th week in a row, saw bracket play, presented by Payne Auto Group, come to an end with a 4-2 loss to the No. 6 Houston Christian University Huskies on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a crowd of 2,497.
The Vaqueros (36-18), which entered Saturday ranked No. 39 in the NCAA RPI, now await their postseason fate which will be decided during the NCAA Tournament Selection Show on May 26 at 11 a.m. on either ESPN 2 or ESPNU.
With the game tied at 1 after two innings, the Vaqueros turned to their third pitcher of the game, senior
Robert Bonilla (1-4), who started his outing with a career-high 5.0 scoreless innings, striking out a season-high tying five.
In the eighth, though,
Katcher Halligan hit an RBI-triple to knock out Bonilla. Then, after a walk,
Jeremy Rader hit a 2-run single to give the Huskies (30-23) a 4-2 lead.
The Vaqueros had just taken the lead in the top of the eighth against
Louis Castano (6-1). Sophomore
Easton Moomau led off with a double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on an RBI-single by junior
Thomas Williams to give the Vaqueros 2-1 lead.
Moomau drove-in the Vaqueros' first run with a groundout in the first to make the score 1-0.
Moomau finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Williams also went 2-for-4.
The Huskies tied the game at 1 in the second on an RBI-single by
Trevor Roper.
UTRGV extends its program record season attendance to 82,258 across 26 dates, an average of 3,164 per date.
