PHOENIZ, Ariz. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team is ready to begin the 2025 season this weekend at the GCU Invitational at the Global Credit Union Arena at GCU.
The Vaqueros will face Gonzaga in the season opener Friday at 6 p.m. Fans can watch the match on
GCU Lopes Live ($). UTRGV plays former Western Athletic Conference (WAC) foe GCU at 8 p.m. Saturday and the match can be watched on
Mountain West Network (free). The Vaqueros close the weekend with a 1 p.m. match Sunday vs. Long Island (LIU), which can be streamed on
GCU Lopes Live ($).
Head-to-Head History
• UTRGV is 0-1 all-time against Gonzaga, with the lone match between these teams being played in Sept. 2000 in Spokane, Washington. Gonzaga won, 3-0.
• UTRGV is 9-11 all-time against GCU. The Lopes won the last match between these teams, 3-0, in the WAC Tournament semifinals in Orem, Utah in Nov. 2023. The last time the Vaqueros and Lopes battled in Phoenix, UTRGV won, 3-1, in Oct. 2022.
• UTRGV is 1-0 all-time against LIU with the lone match between the legacy institutions for both programs being played in 1998.
Last Time Out
• UTRGV went 16-12 in the 2024 season. Its last match was a 3-1 loss to Arkansas State in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
• Gonzaga went 1-27 in the 2024 season. The last match was a 3-2 loss to San Francisco.
• GCU went 20-11 in the 2024 season. The Lopes fell, 3-2, in the WAC Championship match to close the season.
• LIU went 15-17 in the 2024 season. The Sharks ended the year with a 3-1 loss to Chicago State in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Tournament first round.
