PHOENIX – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team fell to the Grand Canyon Lopes 0-3 (21-25, 15-25, 15-25) on Saturday at GCU Arena in their second match of the GCU Invitational.
Sophomore
Martina Franco led the Vaqueros (0-2) with nine kills, seven digs and one block. Freshman
Dimitra Nanou recorded five kills and 11 digs. Junior
Celinaniz Cabranes posted 15 digs. Junior
Isabella Costantini recorded 17 assists, one ace, and five digs.
Bella Nunez led the Lopes (2-0) with 10 kills, 15 assists, an ace, eight digs, and six blocks.
The Vaqueros got off to a good start in the first set, going up 6-3 on a block by freshman
Ana Julia Peixoto and junior
Aaliyah Snead. The Vaqueros still led by three at 9-6 on Nanou kill before the Lopes went on a 7-1 run to take a 12-10 advantage. Down 13-18, the Vaqueros called timeout and went on a 7-1 run, capped by a block by Peixoto and freshman
Shylah Totten, to go up 20-19. The Lopes, however, scored six of the final seven points to take the set.
The Vaqueros jumped out to a 3-2 and 5-4 second set leads on Franco kills. Then, with the set tied at 7, the Lopes scored six-straight points to take a 13-7 lead. The Vaqueros won three of the next four serves, pulling within 10-14 on a Nanou kill, and were still within four at 11-15 on an error. A Franco kill helped the Vaqueros pull within 14-9 before the Lopes scored six of the final seven points to win the set.
Down 4-8 early, the Vaqueros went on a 6-2 run, capped by a Costantini ace, to pull within 9-10. The Lopez pushed back with a 10-3 run to go up 20-12. A kill by freshman
Maria Angeliki Tsagkopoulou helped the Vaqueros scored the next three points, but the Lopez won the final five serves to end the match.
UTRGV closes out the GCU Invitational on Sunday at 1 p.m. against LIU in a match that can be streamed watched
