Men's Tennis Adds Two for 2025-26 Season

RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis head coach Nathan Robinson announced on Monday the addition of Michael Chan and Luke Bishop to the roster for the 2025-26 seasons.

"We are very excited to bring in Michael and Luke. We are in a unique position where we are returning our main contributors from last season, and being able to add two college-ready players is a great luxury," Robinson said. "Overall, we are very excited to add these two to our Vaqueros family. They have high expectations for themselves and the program. They are going to fit right in with our current guys."

Chan is a 5-11 sophomore transfer from South Florida (USF). Last season, he helped the USF Bulls go 20-5 and earn a spot in the NCAA Men's Tennis Tournament. The Bulls rose as high as No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) rankings and went 5-0 in the American Conference season. Chan played five doubles matches with four different partners and got experience playing against high-ranking squads like #2 TCU and #51 Oregon. Originally from Hong Kong, Chan graduated from Merchiston Castle School in Edinburgh, Scotland.

"Michael was a part of a huge turnaround at South Florida. He's a very talented lefty who has natural doubles skills and a game that will mesh well in our program," Robinson said. "His upside is massive and training in our program with opportunities to compete against the best teams in our schedule will allow him to really progress and be a great player for us."

Bishop is a four-star recruit out of Edmond, Oklahoma. He led Edmond Memorial to the 2025 6A State Championship in 2025 and won the individual state title at No. 1 singles. He was dominant at the state tournament, only dropping five games through his first three rounds as he defeated his opening opponent 6-1, 6-0, his quarterfinals opponent 6-1, 6-2, and his semifinals opponent 6-1, 6-0. In the championship match, Bishop overcame an early deficit and battled for a 1-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7:5) victory.

After his stellar senior season, Bishop was named the 2025 Oklahoma Coaches Association (OCA) Player of the Year and made the OCA West All-State Team. The four-year No. 1 varsity player was a nominee for Boys Tennis Player of the Year by the OKC Metro High School Sports Awards and was the No. 3 ranked boys tennis player in Oklahoma.

"Luke has been trending up over the last 18 months," Robinson praised. "He is a gritty, talented player who has a ton of upside. Winning the state championship at 6A in Oklahoma is quite the accomplishment. We are looking forward to getting him into our program and watching him develop."
