RICHMOND, Ky. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros volleyball team is back on the road this weekend to play three matches at the Geri Polvino Invitational hosted by Eastern Kentucky at the Olympic Sports Training Center.
The Vaqueros will play twice on Friday, starting with a 9 a.m. neutral site match against Northern Kentucky before facing the hosting EKU Colonels at 6 p.m. UTRGV caps its weekend Saturday at 3 p.m. in a neutral site match against Akron. Matches will not be streamed but fans unable to attend can follow along via
live stats.
Head-to-Head History
• This will be UTRGV's first match against Northern Kentucky.
• This will be UTRGV's first match against Eastern Kentucky.
• UTRGV is 1-0 all-time against Akron. They faced off for the first time last year at the Zips/CSU Invitational and UTRGV earned a hard-fought 3-2 win.
Last Time Out
• UTRGV went 0-2 during the Southwest Showdown hosted at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. The Vaqueros lost, 3-1, to Texas State in the home opener before falling 3-0 to UTEP. Junior libero
Celianiz Cabranes was named to the Southwest Showdown All-Tournament Team.
• Northern Kentucky went 1-2 at the Indiana Invitational. They started off with a 3-1 win over Western Michigan, then fell 3-0 to Indiana and 3-2 to Southeastern Missouri.
• Eastern Kentucky picked up a 3-2 victory over Marshall on Tuesday. Over the second weekend of the season, EKU went 2-1 at the Xavier Tournament with wins over IU Indianapolis (3-0) and Miami (Ohio) (3-1). The Colonels fell, 3-1, at Xavier.
• Akron went 2-0 at its home tournament, the Zips Invitational. The Zips defeated East Tennessee State, 3-1, then fought for a 3-2 win over American.
