CORPUS CHRISTI – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis team opened the fall season Friday in day one of the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open hosted by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
 
The tournament, scheduled for a 9 a.m. start, began around 2 p.m. due to a rain delay. In doubles, the duo of sophomore South Florida transfer Michael Chan and junior Will Roberts defeated Lamar's Maxwell Lindstedt and Vicente Monge 6-3 in their first match as a pair to advance to the blue draw semifinals.
 
In the green draw, junior Santiago Serrano and sophomore Loic Young Kriegel earned a swift 6-2 victory over Alexandre Chauvel Gobin and Gerardo Delgado from Incarnate Word to advance to the semifinals.
 
In singles action, two Vaqueros stamped their place in the green draw semifinals as Chan earned his first singles win at UTRGV, dispatching Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Filip Vacula in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0. Meanwhile, Young fought back in a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) battle to defeat Abilene Christian's Phillip-Maximilian Huebert.
 
In the orange draw, freshman Luke Bishop picked up his first collegiate singles win after coming back to win in three sets, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi's Mikel Garmendia.
 
The Vaqueros will continue their run at the Jake Frederick Memorial Islander Open tomorrow as doubles is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
