RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer team fell 2-1 in their home opener to the Oral Roberts University on Thursday at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (0-3) were forced to play a man short after a red card in the 18
th minute but that didn't stop them from putting the pressure on the Golden Eagles (1-3-1).
On a goal kick, senior goalie
Alexis Gonzalez delivered a kick across the field that connected with redshirt junior
Eduardo de Oliveira who then got it in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead in the 33
rd minute.
The first half was pretty tight with just one shot on goal coming from the Vaqueros, in the second half though, the Golden Eagles came out with the pressure to grab the lead.
In the 49
th minute, Emilio Cazares found Leonardo Almeida Seixas in the box who then struck it into the goal to tie the match at 1-1.
Three minutes later, the Golden Eagles got a goal from Tweneboa Kodua to take the 2-1 lead.
The Vaqueros battled short-handed and put the pressure on the Golden Eagles the final 10 minutes of the match getting some good looks, but Oral Roberts was able to keep the Vaqueros at bay.
The Vaqueros were outshot 10 to 7 but outshot the Golden Eagles 4 to 3.
The Vaqueros will be back in action on Sunday, Sep. 12 when they visit Incarnate Word at 6 p.m. at Gayle and Tom Benson Stadium.
