RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team battled with the reigning American Conference champions, the Rice University Owls, but fell 4-1 at H-E-B Tennis Center in Harlingen Sunday.
The Chilean duo of junior
Santiago Serrano and sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel continued their winning ways, earning a swift 6-2 victory on court two. Serrano and Young are now 2-0 to open the season with wins over Arkansas and Rice.
On court two, junior
Will Roberts and graduate student
Sam Whitehead went the distance but ultimately dropped the set in a 7-6 (11-9) battle. Rice took the doubles point with a 6-1 win on court one.
Sophomore
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan bounced back in a big way during singles, as he earned a gritty 6-4, 6-3 win over
Joshua Mandelbaum on court six to earn the Vaqueros only point of the match.
On court two, junior
Ivo Isqueiro rose to the occasion, battling against
Santiago Navarro, winning the first set 7-5 and dropping the second 6-2. Isqueiro went up 1-0 off a break early in the third but the match went unfinished.
Roberts shined, winning a back-and-forth first set 7-5 and was knotted at 4-4 before the match would end unfinished.
The Vaqueros will hit the road next week for their Oklahoma road trip where they will face Oklahoma State, St. Joseph's, St. Louis, and Tulsa over the span of three days.
