RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's tennis program is gearing up for their annual Oklahoma road trip as they will face four teams in three days in two different cities this weekend.
Last Time Out
The Vaqueros are coming off a record-breaking weekend which included welcoming a program-record 416 fans in their match against Arkansas and another 115 fans for their match against Rice last weekend at H-E-B Tennis Center.
Doubles was a point of focus as the Vaqueros went 3-3, including a clean 2-0 at the No. 3 line as the Chilean duo of junior
Santiago Serrano and sophomore
Loic Young Kriegel picked up a 7-5 win against Arkansas and a 6-2 win against Rice.
In addition, sophomore
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan earned his first spring victory of his collegiate career, defeating Rice's
Joshua Mandelbaum 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 6 spot Sunday.
Coming off a historic home opener, the Vaqueros will head north to open a four-match road trip, beginning Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.
Saint Joseph's – Jan. 17, 9 a.m. – Greenwood Tennis Center – Stillwater, Okla.
The Vaqueros will open the weekend with a neutral site battle against Saint Joseph Hawks. This is UTRGV's first-ever meeting with Saint Joseph.
Saint Joseph, a member of the Atlantic 10 (A-10) conference, is currently 0-2 on the season with a 6-1 loss to Elon and a 7-0 loss to No. 1 Wake Forest.
Saint Joseph is also home to the No. 70 ranked duo of
Othman Bezzaz and
Ernesto Ruy.
Oklahoma State – Jan. 17, 5 p.m. – Greenwood Tennis Center – Stillwater, Okla.
The Vaqueros will take an extended break after the Saint Joseph match and return in the evening to take on the Oklahoma State (OSU) Cowboys. UTRGV is 4-10 all-time against the Cowboys with their most recent matchup taking place in 2014, a 6-1 loss at OSU.
The Cowboys will begin their season this weekend and face Saint Joseph's in their season opener prior to their match with UTRGV.
The Cowboys boast the No. 92 ranked singles player in
Charlie Valentine.
Saint Louis – Jan. 18, 10 a.m. – Greenwood Tennis Center – Stillwater, Okla.
UTRGV will gear up to play Saint Louis Sunday to round out their visit to Stillwater. UTRGV is 3-0 all time against Saint Louis with their most recent matchup coming in 2010, a 4-3 win for the Vaqueros.
The Billikens are also members of the A-10 and will open their season with this matchup against UTRGV.
Tulsa – Jan. 19, 10 a.m. – Case Tennis Center – Tulsa, Okla.
The Vaqueros will round out their Oklahoma road trip with a road match at Tulsa on Monday. This match will be their second against the Golden Hurricane, the last matchup coming in 2009, a 5-2 win for Tulsa.
The Golden Hurricane are also home to No. 38 ranked doubles team in
Connor Thomas Doig and
Reiya Komagata.
