Women's Basketball Defeats Islanders to Sweep South Texas Showdown

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's basketball team secured a sweep in the South Texas Showdown, presented by Rally Credit Union, Thursday with a 61-49 win over the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (AMCC) Islanders in a Southland Conference (SLC) game.

Freshman forward Chazlyn Dettor scored 16 points with a career-high three three-pointers and six rebounds to lead UTRGV (10-9, 7-3 SLC) to its fourth consecutive win over the Islanders. Junior guard Jalayah Ingram tabbed her second double-double with 15 points and a career-high tying 11 rebounds to go with three steals. Senior forward Charlotte O'Keefe had 16 rebounds with eight points, two blocks and two steals. Redshirt junior guard Erin Maguire scored a season-high 15 points and had three assists.

The Islanders (3-14, 2-8 SLC) had three in double-digit scoring, led by 13 from K'Nari Holliday who had a double-double with 11 rebounds. Chelsea Wooten scored 11 with eight assists and Rayna Williams added 11 points with nine rebounds.

The Islanders held a 31-28 lead at halftime after a back-and-forth first half. UTRGV came out of the gate hot, using an early 8-0 run to take a 12-4 lead. Maguire and Dettor drilled back-to-back three-pointers and Maguire scored nine fast points as the UTRGV defense recorded six steals in the first quarter. It was the Corpus defense that controlled the final minutes of the first quarter, keeping the Vaqueros scoreless for the last 2:15 to hold a slight 18-17 lead going to the second.

Maguire got the second quarter started with her second triple, but the Islanders answered with a three of their own. UTRGV's defense kept Corpus off the board for over five minutes as the Vaqueros kept the Islanders out of rhythm with good post play, recording three blocks, and ball pressure that resulted in nine first-half turnovers. But the Vaqueros shot just 31.4% from the field in the first half and couldn't expand the lead past three points in the second quarter.

UTRGV was scoreless for three minutes late in the half but Ingram kept the game within reach with two clutch jumpers before the break. Corpus went to the locker room with a 31-28 lead.

The Vaqueros limited the Islanders to just eight points in the third quarter to take a 40-38 lead into the fourth. UTRGV forced two three-minute scoring droughts to flip the game in its favor midway through the quarter. O'Keefe tied the contest at 34-34 with a solid layup and added a jumper off a nice feed from Angiolet to have the Vaqueros leading by as many as four.

The fourth quarter was all UTRGV. Dettor recorded a block then knocked down her third three-pointer to push the Vaqueros lead to 46-41. A 7-0 run gave UTRGV its largest lead to that point at 53-42. Dettor and Ingram sparked the momentum-swinging run as Dettor powered to the basket for an and-1 layup and Ingram hit a nice pull-up jumper after a Dettor rebound extended the possession.

UTRGV went 10-for-12 at the free throw line in the fourth to put the game away. The Vaqueros won the turnover battle, forcing 17 from the Islanders while only committing 11. It's the fourth win in the last six games that the Vaqueros had less than 12 turnovers.

The Vaqueros will head to Houston Christian University for a 1 p.m. SLC game Saturday.
