RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women's tennis team battled, pushing four matches to third sets, but eventually fell 5-2 to the Texas State Bobcats (TXST) Saturday at Orville Cox Tennis Center.
The Vaqueros pushed the Bobcats all afternoon, forcing four third set matches in singles play.
On court two, junior
Rhea Makesar secured the first set with a solid 6-3 win before losing an early break which led to a 6-3 second set loss. In the third, Makesar turned it back around with a dominant 6-1 performance to defeat
Charlotte Roesch and earn the first point for the Vaqueros.
Meanwhile, on court three, sophomore
Hitakamya Narwal fought through a marathon match. In a brutal, grind-it-out first set,
Tadiwa Mauchi scraped out a 7-6 (7-4) win which ended after two matches had already been completed. Narwal wasn't phased, stealing an early break and claiming the second set 6-3. Leading 2-1 in the third, Narwal broke Mauchi's serve to go up 3-1 and broke Mauchi's serve once again at 5-2 to win the set 6-2.
On court one, senior
Barbara Martinez used a mix of finesse, power, and consistency to take the first set from
Emily Niers. Niers bounced back earning a 6-3 win in the second. Martinez trailed 5-3 in the third and knotted the match at 5-5. Niers came back to life and won the next two games to clinch the match for the Bobcats.
Sophomore
Mariia Bakhtina came out firing, winning the first set in 6-3, before dropping a back-and-forth second that went 7-6 (7-4). In the third,
Stoney Cooks carried over the momentum to secure a 6-2 victory.
The Bobcats earned straight set victories on courts four and six in singles play and opened the match with the doubles point after winning on all three courts.
The Vaqueros will travel to Kingsville Sunday for a dual match with Javelinas which is set to start at 1 p.m. at the Javelina Tennis Courts.
