RIO GRANDE VALLEY — The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women's soccer team dropped a Southland Conference (SLC) match Thursday, 2-1, to the Nicholls Colonels at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
The Vaqueros (4-9-1, 0-5-1 SLC) tied the match 1-1 in the 65
th minute when junior
Isabella Burtini scored her sixth goal of the campaign by a lead pass off the boot of junior
Sienna Gillespie, the second of her career. Gillespie made a beautiful through pass that found a wide open Burtini, which created a one-on-one chance for the striker and connected into the net.
The Colonels (5-4-6, 3-1-3 SLC) opened the scoring in the 20
th minute when
Jezlyn Nelson dribbled her way into the left wing and created a window just enough to score the first goal of the match.
Nicholls got the lead back in the 79
th minute,
Alyssa Wheeler was drawing up for a corner kick from the left wing and curved the kick right into the top right side.
In the 77
th minute,
Aislinn Wright launched a screaming shot from 30 yards outside the box and sophomore
Mariana Amezcua soared to her right side and deflected the shot for a save.
The match began by both teams jostling for position early, trading possession back and forth in the first 20 minutes of the match. Both squads combined for six shots in those 20 minutes and would end the half with a total of 15 shots taken.
UTRGV outshot Nicholls 18-10 with both teams going 6-6 shots on goal. The Colonels also tallied seven corners versus four by the Vaqueros.
The Vaqueros return to action Oct. 22, to face Stephen F. Austin at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex at 6:30 p.m., on Thursday.
All matches held at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex will be free and open to the public. Gates open at 5:30 p.m.
