ST. LOUIS – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros men's soccer dropped their road match to the Lindenwood (LU) Lions, 3-1, at Hunter Stadium Thursday.
The Vaqueros (2-4-2, 0-2-1 OVC) narrowed the deficit on a late goal from junior
Jevaughn Harris, the first of his career, in the 81
st minute off a cross from junior
Alvaro Abeal, who notched his first career assist.
The Lions (5-2-5, 2-0-2 OVC) received goals from
David Magalhaes in the 4
th minute,
Eddy Mwanje in the 26
th minute, and
Luke Neely in the 48
th minute.
Leland Gray and
Thato Lekgetho earned assists in the victory as well.
Trailing 3-0 in the 81
st minute, junior
Tobias Buch recovered a clearance from Lindenwood goalkeeper
Quinn Closson and played the ball ahead to sophomore
Ramon Zuniga, who found sophomore
Dylan Hernandez near midfield.
Hernandez sent the ball down the right side to Abeal, who raced past the defense and delivered a centering pass to Harris for the header.
The Vaqueros were outshot by the Lions 11-10 but held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal. UTRGV also generated seven corner kicks to Lindenwood's three.
UTRGV will return home to face the Eastern Illinois Panthers for the first time in program history on Sunday at 11 a.m. at UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex.
