RIO GRANDE VALLEY – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros baseball team fell to the Kansas Jayhawks 10-3 on Saturday at UTRGV Baseball Stadium in front of a sellout crowd of 5,040, the ninth largest in program history.
Including the crowd of 5,862 on Friday, this is the first time the Vaqueros have ever welcomed back-to-back crowds of 5,000+.
With the Vaqueros (1-1) down 3-0 in the bottom of the second, junior
Easton Moomau hit a booming triple to right center. Junior PSJA alum
Julius Ramirez followed with a sacrifice fly off
Mathis Nayral (1-0) to bring the Vaqueros within 3-1.
That was it against Nayral, who pitched 7.0 innings of 2-hit ball, striking out four. The other hit was a double by senior
Thomas Williams.
The Jayhawks (1-1) gave Nayral some insurance with a 6-run sixth that included a 2-run home run by
Josh Dykhoff, a sacrifice fly by
Brady Ballinger, and a 3-run home run by
Augusto Mungarrieta to make the score 9-1.
Ballinger came up with an RBI-groundout in the eighth to make the score 10-1.
The Vaqueros staged a rally in the ninth, as the first two batters reached to set up an RBI-double by junior
Armani Raygoza. Moomau followed with a sacrifice fly to cap the scoring.
The Jayhawks opened the game by loading the bases against senior Los Fresnos alum
Víctor Loa (0-1).
Dariel Osoria lifted a sacrifice fly and
Tyson LeBlanc hit an RBI-groundout to make the score 2-0.
The Jayhawks went up 3-0 in the second on a sacrifice fly by
Jordan Bach.
UTRGV and Kansas conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m. as part of
#RallyTheValley Week, presented by McAllen International Airport. Fans will receive all you can play wristbands, courtesy of Main Event. It's Family Fun Day. Fans can get four general admission tickets, four drinks, and four hot dogs for $44. It's also Winter Texan Day. Fans ages 65+ can purchase general admission tickets for $6 each. It's also Classic Rock Day. Fans will enjoy classic rock music throughout the game.
