MOSCOW, Idaho – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) men's tennis team fell, 4-1, to the UC San Diego (UCSD) Tritons Saturday at the P1FCU Kibbie Dome.
UCSD took the doubles point with wins on courts one and two, but on court three, the pair of
Paolo Bonaguro and
Tsz Him "Michael" Chan defeated
Prathinav Chunduru and
Micheal Forticq, 6-3.
Graduate student
Sam Whitehead wrapped up his match first in singles play, winning a back-and-forth match against
Oliver Worth. Whitehead trailed 3-2 in the first before winning four consecutive games to claim the first set. In the second, Worth led 6-5 and was serving for the set, but Whitehead staved off two set points to force the tiebreaker.
The pair traded points in the tiebreaker, with the score evening up at 3-3. Whitehead recaptured his momentum, winning four consecutive points to win the second 7-6 (7:3) and the match.
Junior
Santiago Serrano pushed
Prathinav Chunduru to a third set, but ultimately falling 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 on court two.
UCSD clinched the win with singles wins on courts five and six.
UTRGV will take a week to recover before traveling to Mississippi for a two-match road trip where they will visit Alcorn State and Jackson State on Feb. 27 and 28, respectively.
